Portfolio Categories allow you to organize your projects into structured groups, making it easier for visitors to filter and browse your portfolio. Categories work similarly to default WordPress post categories, but they are dedicated specifically to portfolio items.

Using well-structured categories improves navigation, enhances user experience, and enables dynamic filtering on portfolio listing pages.

1. Adding a New Category (From Categories Page)

You can create and manage categories directly from the Categories management screen.  
Step 1: Navigate to Categories
  • Go to your WordPress Dashboard.
  • From the left-hand menu, select: Portfolio → Categories.
Step 2: Fill in Category Details
  • Name: Enter the category title (e.g., Web Design).
  • Slug: A URL-friendly version of the name (e.g., web-design). Leave blank to auto-generate.
  • Parent Category (Optional): Select a parent category to create a sub-category structure.
  • Description (Optional): Add a short description. This may appear on category archive pages depending on your theme.
Step 3: Save Category

Click Add New Category. The newly created category will appear in the list on the right-hand side.
Example Use Case: Create main categories such as Web Design, Branding, Architecture, or Photography to structure your portfolio effectively.

2. Adding a Category from the Portfolio Edit Screen

You can quickly create and assign categories while creating or editing a portfolio item—without leaving the editor.

 

Assign an Existing Category
  • Go to Portfolio → Add New (or edit an existing project).
  • Locate the Portfolio Categories meta box in the sidebar.
  • Check the box next to the desired category name.

3. Editing an Existing Category

You can quickly create and assign categories while creating or editing a portfolio item—without leaving the editor.
Steps to Edit
  • Navigate to Portfolio → Categories.
  • Locate the category you want to modify.
  • Hover over the category name and select:
    • Edit: Opens the full edit screen.
    • Quick Edit: Allows inline editing.
  • Update the Name, Slug, Parent, or Description as needed.
  • Click Update to save changes.

4. Assigning Categories to Portfolio Items

  • While editing a project, check one or more categories in the Portfolio Categories meta box.
  • Categories can be assigned when creating the project or later by editing it.
  • Each portfolio item can belong to multiple categories.

Example: A project can belong to both Web Design and Branding categories.

5. Frontend Display & Filtering

Portfolio categories play an important role on the frontend of your website.

 

  • Categories may appear alongside portfolio items in grid or listing layouts.
  • Visitors can click a category name to view related projects.
  • Some portfolio layouts include a dynamic filter bar that allows users to filter projects by category without reloading the page.
  • Category archive pages can display all projects within a specific category.
